Lovey

Every kid has a lovey, one object that catches their fancy and that they decide is the one and only object that will help them go to sleep and comfort them. At least, I used to think that every kid has a lovey. The Stinkerdoodle shook my faith in that belief. Apparently, though, attachment parented kids often don’t have loveys because their parents fill that need. I’m learning, though, that my original belief may not have been wrong at all; it’s just that some kids find their loveys later.
In recent weeks, the Stinkerdoodle has decided on two loveys. What are they you ask?
Yep, a penguin and a green hot rod car. You may be thinking that the penguin makes sense – warm, soft, huggable. Yeah, I get that, but the car is BY FAR his favorite lovey. That thing goes everywhere with him – in the car, to the playground, to bed, on playdates, running errands. It doesn’t always get his undivided attention but shame on the parent that can’t produce it right away when it is requested! That’s grounds for tears and maybe some hollering, especially if it is close to nap time. The green hot rod – or his milk cup – are the first things he requests when he wakes up in the morning or for nap. If he sees all the toys put away in the living room, the first thing he’ll do is go to the Matchbox carrier in search of that darn green car.
I think it’s kind of cool that he’s finally decided on some loveys since it is a step in being a little more independent while going to sleep. However, I wish one of them wasn’t so small and, well, loseable! Pete was saying the other day that we should try to get another one or two of them as backup in case the annointed car should disappear, a wise suggestion. Unfortunately, it came in a pack of 10 cars and I really don’t need duplicates of the other 9 hot rods and muscle cars! Hmm, going to have to think about that a bit more and, for now, keep an eye on the car so it doesn’t decide to disappear!
